In 1983 there was a computer genius Walter Nebicher (Desi Arnaz Jr. no less) working for the New York City Police. He also designed games and other fun stuff on the side and during that time, he created Automan.

Automan was a hologram that could be seen at any time without special equipment (like the doctor on Start Trek Voyager) and he was a first rate crime fighting machine. The downside was huge power requirements that always fell right during a time of need, but resolved itself in the nick of time. Automan was a fully artificially intelligent construct.
Chuck Wagner played Automan (or Otto Mann when undercover).

Automan had a little “buddy” named Cursor, a small floating program that can create any object Automan needs (usually a car…hence the name) in his battle against the forces of evil.
