Captain Jack Sparrow: Out of the Closet?

Captain Jack Sparrow will be a bit more of “ambiguous” in the movie of the Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest. It seems that Johnny Depp recently read a book titled Sodomy and the Pirate Tradition: English Sea Rovers in the Seventeenth-Century Caribbean and it gave him some new insight into the character.

“I liked the idea of [Jack] being ambiguous,” he tells Mark Binelli in the new summer double issue of Rolling Stone. “Because women were thought to be bad luck on ships. And these pirates would go out for years at a time. So, you know, there is a possibility that one thing might lead to another. You’re lonely. You have an extra ration of rum. ‘Cabin boy!’” -

I wonder if he also read Rum, Sodomy and the Lash: Piracy, Sexuality, and Masculine Identity as well. Personally, I’m all for it and all for a realistic and honest potrayal of life at that time. And for you people that are secure enough in your sexuality to not see this as a big deal, then I also suggest a great book set in a fantasy/medieval setting called Luck in the Shadows (and it’s sequel).
