Not much going on today so time for some memories. Now I know Buck Rogers has been around since the 1930s when it was on radio, but that’s not the Buck I’m talking about today. The one I’m talking about is the series that ran on television from 1979-81.
“The year is 1987 and NASA launches the last of America’s deep space probes. In a freak mishap Ranger 3 and its pilot Captain William ‘Buck’ Rogers are blown out of their trajectory into an orbit which freezes his life support systems and returns Buck Rogers to Earth 500 years later.”

This was the real Buck (Gil Gerard), living in a steamy Sex-opolis of the future. I watch an episode on television recently in re-run and I was actually suprised how it looked like a soft-corn porno movie. Having Buck Rogers running around as the hero from the past and never following the orders of his superior officer Colonel Wilma Dearing (Erin Gray) who was always considered “just another hot chick” by the ego-centric Buck.

And why not? She was always flirting with Buck and running around in her super-tight satin jumpsuit. I had a crush on her myself. Then there was the comedic robot Tiwki (voiced by cartoon vocal legend Mel Blanc) and his straight man counterpart Dr. Theopolis (the talking disk hanging from his neck) that added some space drama flare to the whole thing.

Back to the sex. Princess Ardala (Pamela Hensley) was the leader of some people living somewhere else in the galaxy, I forgot where, but the point is she had this total sex obsession with Buck and each week…her plot was all centered around getting him in the sack. He outfits pretty much consisted of glittery bikinis and capes. And here you thought I was kidding about the softcore porn thing.

This series did have some fun space stuff like really cool starfighters and such, but it was the early 80s after all. I watched this show all the time and while it was awesome back then, it seems to leave me with “what was I thinking” thoughts watching it now.

I guess I was thinking about those skin-tight space suits that Wilma Dearing wore.
Now here’s the cool intro:
