This is, in my completely unprofessional (you have to be paid to be a professional!) opinion are the best Movie Series ever.

Since this ended up being such a long blog, I thought I would break it up. Today are numbers 10 through 6.

What do you think? There are plenty more great movies out there, many of which I have completely forgotten about or simply didn’t have enough room for. Leave a comment below. I’d love to hear what you think!

10 Star Trek: I would have to say that this set of movies consists of some of the best, and also some of the worst movies I’ve seen. It’s true: the even movies are much stronger than the odd movies. The worst, by far are the first and fifth movies. I think the Geneva conventions would frown upon anyone showing those two pieces of drek to prisoners of war.

The even movies are generally the best. Of course, The Wrath of Kahn is a favorite among most Trekies. However, my favorites are the Voyage Home (IV), and The Undiscovered County (VI).

The even movies aren’t all top tier, however. I would have to say the lowest of the low points was the set-up and subsequent death of Data, which occurred in the most recent film, an even numbered entry. Ho Hum… talk about a yawner.
Oh, and of course pretty much all of the aforementioned Star Trek V. Boy, that one sure was a dog turd.

I still remember the special thrill I felt when I saw a trailer for a new Star Trek movie. Even the trailers were often better than the movies they preceded.

What I learned from these movies: A) When faced with a task at work, always overestimate wildly the time it will take to finish it. B) “I always set my phaser to stun,” really isn’t all that good of a pickup line.

9) Pirates of The Caribbean: OK, I admit it. I am a sucker for silly spectacle. While I was really disappointed in the Third movie, I definitely would like to see it again, if only for the dream sequence. These movies have a lot of things going for them, and mostly those things have the faces of dead presidents on them. Yes, I am talking about boatloads, and I mean boatloads of money, which is what this trilogy made. And while yes, this trilogy was ultimately an empty one, it started a lot of stars on their way upward, and cemented Johnny Depp as being one weird, talented dude. Not bad for a concept that got its start as a ride.

There is even word of not one, but several more Pirates movies on the way. Avast!

What I learned from these movies: A) Never ever trust a pirate. Duh! B) Never make deals with the East India Trading Company. C) Pirates generally have one or more of the following: sharp knives, haunted gold, rotten teeth, and killer body odor.

8) Terminator: Who’d have thought a pretty much standard chase movie concept could be done so well? That’s really all the Terminator movies boil down to: escape, evade, and survive. But James Cameron instilled the first two with such thoughtful commentary, action, and special effects, and great actors fleshed an above average script into something wonderful.

The third movie really isn’t all that bad, especially considering it didn’t have James Cameron or Linda Hamilton. Though they follow each other, you don’t really have to see all three in order to enjoy them. Each has plenty of edge-of-your-seat action.

What I learned from these movies: A) If anyone introduces themselves as: “John Conner?” run away. Fast. B) The future isn’t yet written. You can change it.

7) Harry Potter: The Harry Potter Books are an incredible source material for the movies. However, Hollywood has a well-established history of butchering great books. That’s why it is hard to believe that the movies have remained so good. But they have, and as such they have been driving force at the box office. Legions of kids and fully grown adults look forwards to each installment. I have to admit that I am one of them.

While I don’t think that the movies have really spawned anything (other than a below-average game title here and there) like my #1 below, they sure have generated revenue like crazy. We’ll have to see if the series can keep up its momentum. I know the next one could have cardboard sets and it still would make a ton of cash.

What I learned from these movies: A) Hmmmmm. Maybe I haven’t learned anything. But I sure have enjoyed it!

6) Superhero Movies: I am completely cheating here. However, it is my list. There are so many great movies in this “series,” I’m having trouble picking out a few: Spider Man 2, X-2, and Superman 1 and 2, and The Incredibles are a few that instantly come to mind.
I think I can also safely count Hellboy, which completely rocked. He is sort of a superhero, after a fashion.

My new all time favorite, however, might be Batman Begins with Christian Bale. This is the way to reboot a franchise.

Also worth noting is Superman Returns which was certainly a spectacle of a movie but seemed rather light on the action. Honestly, they could take a few pages worth of notes from Bruce Wayne.

The recent Sky High was pretty good too. So was The Mask (The original).

Unfortunately, this series also has some major disappointments. Remember Captain America? I’d rather forget. Also The Punisher with Dolph Lundgren, and the most recent Hulk movie. And of course Catwoman.

Pretty much all the 1980’s (and early 1990’s) superhero movies completely sucked. But I think we are now in a sort of a Golden Age of superhero movies (with some notable exceptions). Hollywood seems to have finally figured out that you have to respect the source material if you want to create and sustain a franchise.

What I learned from these movies: A) I love Superhero movies! But no matter how many times I watch them, I will never learn how to fly. B) Deep down inside, every villain wants to monologue.

OK! That is it for today. Tomorrow, Numbers 5-1!
