Top Ten Movie Series Ever? Part Two

The other day, I listed my favorite movie series, 10-6. Today, numbers 5-1. What’s your favorite movie series? Did it make my list? See anything on here that you think should be changed? Let me know!

5) Lord of the Rings: This series won 17 Oscars (according to one report I saw), among 30 nominations. So I would feel remiss for not having it on the list somewhere. However, did this series change your life even just a little bit? Oh sure, all of us weigh a lot less in the wallet having shelled out tickets for the theater and then again for each of the DVDs and maybe even the extended editions, but how many times have you seen all three? For me, it’s hard to find three and a half hours at a time to see even one of them, so the movies have a tendency to collect dust.

Since this series is so new we’ll have to wait to see its long term effect on our culture, which isn’t the case for the remaining entries on this list.

What I learned from these movies: A) What exactly a hobbit looks like, hairy feet in all. B) It is possible to have disgustingly long toe nails and still be appealing. Yay! There is hope for me after all!

4) Alien: “In Space, No One Can Hear You Scream.” What can I say? The first and second were the best. Remember Bill Paxton’s nervous Marine? “That’s it, man! Game over man!” What bliss. Or Ripley’s line… I’m paraphrasing here… “Get away from her you large female puppy dog!”

Each movie in this growing series has brought new terrors to those of us who love them so. Remember Face Huggers? The Chest Bursters? What about the Dog Alien? Or the all out battle between the Aliens and the Predators in the most recent movie, AvP?
Even Alien3, considered by many to be the weakest of them all has a lot going for it. It was directed by David Fincher (Seven, The Game), for one thing. It’s actually quite a good movie and worth another look.

I would easily say that Alien and Aliens are modern classics in every sense of the word. With an alien designed by H.R. Giger and Sigourney Weaver in her panties, how could anyone go wrong?

What I learned from these movies: A) When an alien is very quickly picking off people one by one, NEVER EVER, EVER GO ANYWHERE ALONE. B) Read A again to yourself, and then aloud. Repeat. C) If slime starts dripping on you, it’s best not to whimper quietly. You’ll most likely be eaten. Instead, run very quickly away. Unfortunately, you’ll probably still be eaten. However, as everyone knows fast food is bad for you, the alien might think twice about it.

3) Indiana Jones and The…. Raiders of the Lost Ark is one of the best Action movies ever made, from the boulder chase, to “Snakes… Why’d it have to be Snakes?” I’m sure everyone has a favorite scene or line. Harrison Ford made an awesome lively, believable action hero… you wanted him to win, but feared that he just might not. You felt his aches, his pains.

All three movies are excellent in their own right. I can’t count how many times I have seen the first and third movies. Even the second one, Temple of Doom, is worth a repeat viewing occasionally.
What I learned from these movies: A) X always marks the spot. B) Generally, gold idols can be bad for your health. C) Never ever get into a fist fight with a large bald man near a spinning propeller. D) If you can just get your enemies to tie you up while they look at the contents of Ark of the Covenant, all your problems are instantly solved! E) While a bit of iron in your diet is certainly healthy, other metals such as bullets and poison arrows are not.

2) James Bond: “That’s Bond, James Bond.” I think this is the longest running movie (don’t quote me… there may be porno movie series that have more… er… entries) series ever (21 movies and counting!). The character was created in 1952, and has been running strong ever since.
By now, James should have been killed by any one of several things, including a jilted lover or a sexually transmitted disease. He should have a liver the size and color of a raisin. However, especially with the recent reboot, Casino Royale, he remains fresh and lively, and a heck of a lot of fun to watch.
I can’t think of another series where the principle character has been played by so many people so ably. Who’s your favorite Bond? I’ll have to wait and see… Daniel Craig has started out really strongly. I’m definitely looking forward to the next installment.

What I learned from these movies: A) The only thing that’s best shaken is a martini. B) Anyone who has a white cat is definitely on the shady side of the law. C) If you are bent on world domination, never hire hot chicks; they are way too easy to seduce. D) To pick up hot chicks, just say your last name first (see what I mean?!).

And now, My All Time Favorite Movie Series:

1) Star Wars: Say what you want about the Ewoks, and Jar Jar Binks (who still gives me the shudders even when I think about him)… these movies are still amazing. There are so many cool bits… great lines, and memorable characters. Who, as a kid didn’t utter those famous words: “May the force be with you!” or pretend to be a true Jedi Knight fighting with a light saber against the forces of evil?

The first movie (Episode 4) was a landmark when it first came out… the first real Blockbuster, and it spawned untold legions of offspring: five theatrical movies, several TV movies, cartoons, comic books, action figures, et cetera.
There have also been tons of great video games, books, and parodies (of which Chad Vader, Night Store Manager is my favorite). Those are a multi-billion dollar industry unto themselves.
Star Wars created a whole new language, for heaven’s sake: I bet you’ll recognize each of these words: sith, light saber, chewie, Force, Hutt, jedi, Bantha Fodder, etc. This is the series you enjoyed as a kid, and watched growing up. This is the series you want to share with your kids.

What I learned from these movies: A) Never ever say, “There’s too many of them,” or “Their deflector shields are too strong.” Anyone who says that is TOAST. B) A well-placed photon torpedo will destroy just about anything. C) If anyone says, “I have a bad feeling about this,” believe them!
