200px-stardust_promo_posterI picked up Stardust at the local video store on a whim. I had heard good things from friends about it, but it had gotten poor reviews by critics. Let me tell you this…. I thought it was excellent. My whole family did actually.

Michelle Pfeiffer, Robert Dinero, Claire Danes, Ian McKellen, Rupert Everett, Ricky Gervais, all have major roles or cameos.

The story concerns a boy who is meant for something better. There is a wall outside his town that leads to an alternate universe where magic thrives, witches roam, and stars fall to earth as beautiful maidens. On a dare, really, the boy decides to cross the wall in search of a shooting star. If he can bring back the star in less than a week, the woman he loves will marry him.

Now that I have written the basic outline of the plot above, it strikes me to be a bit silly. But the truth is, you really don’t notice the silliness because everything is pulled off so well. It really is a fascinating adventure, filled with great acting, special effects, and direction. It’s well worth your time.

Rating: ★★★★½
