field_guideI saw Spiderwick Chronicles with my daughter who is now six.  She spent most of the time on my lap, with her arms wrapped around me.  At one point, she was trying to cover her ears and said “Cover my eyes, dad!”  Later she farted on me, twice.  But that’s another story.

After it was all over, she said it’s the best movie she has ever seen.

It’s a good movie. It’s a lot scarier than I had anticipated.  I even jumped once.

I especially liked Thimbletack (voiced by Martin Short!) and Hogsweal (Seth Rogen!).  Nick Nolte does a great job as the main baddy.

While the human actors do a great job, the special effects really steal the show.

Honestly, I like the books better (We’re about to start book three).  The movie is the entire five book set, so they had to shorten things a bit, but it seems faithful in spirit to what we’ve read.  The books are so short you could hold your breath and read each twice, so not a lot is lost in the translation.

Overall, I’d give this one a Rating: ★★★★☆.  It has plenty of surprises, a moving story, and great acting.
