90210 Spin-Off in the Works
Friday, March 14, 2008
The CW network is hoping to capture some of that old-school magic with a new class from Beverly Hills 90210. It’s the show that made a bunch of teens famous who all went on to do pretty much nothing. All except Brian Austin Green who’s recently earned my respect by 1) nailing Megan Fox regularly (curse him) and 2) staring in Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Anyway, this new spin-off is currently in development.
Details on the project — including which if any of the characters on the original series will make the transition to the spinoff — remain sketchy.
The spinoff, which is close to getting a writer, has been put on the fast track by the network. It is expected to decide whether to order a pilot by the end of the month.
According to sources, “Beverly Hills, 90210″ creator Darren Star is not involved.
This would be the second spinoff from the series about privileged teens living in Beverly Hills, which aired on Fox from 1990-2000. The first one, the Star-created “Melrose Place,” had a successful seven-year run on Fox. It didn’t feature any major characters from “Beverly Hills.”
Seriously, most of the cast went on to do some B-List stuff, well…except Jason Priestley in a bit role in on of the greatest westerns ever, Tombstone. Given that this is the CW, I don’t have high hopes for this and I don’t think even having the iconic name is going to help much.
