I, too, wanted nothing more than to love this movie even though I had a sinking feeling in my stomach that it would end up like a kick in the gonads. And so it did in most respects. It seems as though they were trying to update the franchise by taking it into a more 'modern' era. This was most evident by the revealing end (that you had to be a pinball wizard) to not see coming. The only thing it was missing was a cameo from Fox Mulder.
