Here is what we know about “The Last Airbender” movie (Also known as “Avatar: The Last Airbender” ) :
The release date is currently set by Paramount Pictures for 07-02-10.
The Last Airbender Trilogy will be written, directed, and produced by M. Night Shyamalan.
The first movie will be based on Book 1.
There was a dispute over the word “Avatar”. James Cameron has been working on a movie titled “Avatar” for some time, and so this series will not use that name in the title.
Filming will begin in Philadelphia in May 2009. They will also be shooting in Greenland.
The above link has a full synopsis of the Airbender story.
Here is another Airbender Rumor:
Will There Be A Book 4?
No. The creators confirmed that at San Diego Comic Con in July, 2007. Other stories will be told in the Avatar world and there are the upcoming live-action movies, but the animated series ends with Book 3: Fire. Nickelodeon has announced that there will be “(t)hree original 60-minute animated Avatar movies,” in addition to the live-action, feature-length film trilogy by M. Night Shyamalan.
Source — I know there are a lot of people worried about the above paragraph. I will do some more research. Hopefully this information is in error.
Here are links to the bios of the co-creators of Avatar:
Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko
Before watching the movie, you may want to catch up on old episodes. You can watch a bunch (all of them, I think) of full episodes at Nickelodeon.com.

I think its definetly silly how the produces end the movie in book 3. Atleaste if your going to end it with book 3, show us where Zukko and Katara/Sakka moms are… and for god sakes tell us where Azula went (make aang take her fire bending away too)

Perhaps some of these answers can be found in the next series. I have seen that they plan on telling other stories. I can imagine, if it is in the same universe, that they could tie in a few of those loose ends.

Next series??!!!
are you sure their making a next series or are u referring to the M. Night Shymalan movie?
Eithor way, the producers were really lazy for not making a “book 4: air”. They need to know that ending the story this way and leaving the fans hanging is not a good way to satisfy them.
… but seriously, they need to make a “book 4: air”

Um….Aang was the LAST airbender. I don’t see how there ever could be a book 4: Air when he’s already MASTERED it pretty much!!!

@ “blah the mysterious”
… your wrong! There needs to be a book 4. Although you do make a good point about Aang being the last airbender and etc… we still haven’t found out the answers of what happened to Zuko’s mom, what happened to Azula after her breakdown, if Katara’s mom really did die, and many more. There most definetly needs to be a book 4: air. The producers ending the story with all those questions unsolved is not a good way to end the show.
Blah says:
July 29th, 2008 at 3:37 pm
I understand what you mean. I do, I promise. But why make it be call Book 4: AIR when he’s mastered that element. Personally, I think Zuko will find his mom, Azula was put in jail, Katara’s mom IS dead, and more. Those just seem obvious to me. I mean, maybe there would be a Book 4: Something Else…lol. But I don’t think it would be called air….I just wanted to put my opinions out there. Maybe they would call it Air but I don’t see the point of calling it that because the other books were the names of the elements that he was seeking to master. *shrugs*

Oh i see what your saying buddy .
But in a way, air seems sorta reasonable being that “air” is the fresh start that Aang and the gang go towards, heading towards something new (my opinion).
Man the producers really has us avatar fans fired up over this thing lol, i hope they take this into concideration and just make the darn book 4 already!

Feirce_couture says:
July 30th, 2008 at 8:23 pm
I herd the movie coming in 2010 will be about book 1, so i guess its gonna be like one of those harry potter films where they have a new film each year (maybe the one coming in 2010 is “book one: water”, then book two: earth, book 3: fire, and etc…) If thats how their planning on playing the movie then whats the damn point of watching it if we already know whats gonna happen lol.
I think “JET LEE” should play THE FIRE LORD… he’d be the perfect person to play that part. And the old guy who played Mr. Minyagi from “the karate kid” could play ZUko’s unlce, but i herd he died a couple years back.
Blah says:
July 31st, 2008 at 6:21 am
Lol nice. Yeah, we know what’s gonna happen. Personally I think they should just keep it as a cartoon/animated. It’s just so wrong having real people play them. I mean, who’s gonna play aang?? And their voices will be different

M. Night??? What were they thinking? A guy who’s never directed a fight scene, never used special effects, whose movies are DULL and POINTLESS… And they’re going to shoot Avatar in Philadelphia? Where? In an Amish Barn?
My prediction: No one is going to give M. Night 300 million dollars to shoot this trilogy. Not after “The Happening.”
So a) the movie will never get made. It will go into development hell or b) they’ll have to find a real director and M. Night will make a pile of case for just stepping out of the way…
There are so many talented directors who could make this movie great. They went and picked the worst one…. why is Hollywood so stupid?

…I agree with you saying that M. Night is the worst director to be making the avatar movie (you have a point to that)… practically all the movies this poor guy makes are boring and is a waste of money (allot of them are basically mystery films). But then again, who knows, this guy might surprise us in the end with a SHOCKING TWIST!

Your way off, I was at the castings and this movie is going to be cool. Maybe this director hasn’t done this kind of movie before but I bet it’s going to be really good. The kids that were trying out had to know martial arts and they were great, all kinds of kids. I can’t wait for the movie.
Matt says:
September 5th, 2008 at 9:29 pm
The last book should be called air if it was made. Well, for one, if Aang and Katara were to have children they would be water/air hybrids so he wouldn’t be the last airbender. Secondly, the people who took over the one air temple were similar in respect to the other groups when they first began, albeit they use technology. If Aang were to teach them, they possibly could become Air nomads. Honestly, book 4 could be about all the loose ends and how Aang’s life is devoted to the restoration of the Air nomads. Oh, and btw, you’re welcome Nickoloden for me giving you ideas.
Feirce_couture says:
September 6th, 2008 at 2:36 am
Matt your idea is definetly clever and your absolutely right!
I hate it when other people say “there won’t be another air bender because Aang is the last one”. Like seriously, didn’t it ever occur to them that Aang and Katara MIGHT have children which later on in the more to come generation their kids, grandkids, great grandkids, and so one will have the airbending power too.
If I don’t start hearing news by the end of the year that the creaters change their mind and decide to make a book 4 then they are really cruel!

I think that the avatar series in nickelodeon is kind of short
I mean in the end it didn’t show what happen when zuko ask his dad where is her mother. And the big question is what happen to azula and is aang and katara boyfriend and girlfriend?
pls make a chapter about these question
Emily says:

The series is over, people. There will be no Book 4: Air. Although I, too, wanted there to be a Book 4, what more could they possibly have in an episode besides finding out about Zuko’s mother? Someone said something about Katara’s mother, but she’s already dead. Nothing more can really happen in this story. The Fire Nation is defeated, Aang and Katara are together, and everyone is happy. The End!

Sadly people, I give most of you Kudos for support for our beloved Avatar. Its a story thats captivated young and old. ( if you call 26 old ) But I’ve looked for a series pack that would have Book 4 ready to hold the movies. I think it would be a cool way to keep them all together. I’m not quite ready to fork over money for each season pack separately. If you’ve seen Slayers, its a great 3 season Anime that took years to make and only recently are they making a season 4 unrelated to each season before it, except for the reaccurring cast.
I think any anime could make a great movie, or several. Slayers was a good example. If someone’s heard of an alternate Manga storyline then we should share it I’m at Telerian3@aol.com if you care to help me keep up :) Have fun everyone. ^_^;

Ok, there definately should be Book 4: Air. And I’m not just saying that because I REALLY want there to be one. They need to answer all those unanswered questions. If you’re saying it shouldn’t be called Air, then what else would it be called. Maybe he isn’t the last airbender. Maybe Sozin didn’t kill them all, maybe they’re just hiding somewhere. And if he did kill them, Aang could just teach new people how to airbend. It could be about him restoring the world of airbenders. And of course you have to have the Zuko’s mom thing. You can’t just end a series like that!! That’s just cruel! What was the thing that the above article said about 3 new 60 minute animated episodes? Maybe that will clear up the ending.
About the movie. It would be awesome if they did it right. But I don’t want new people playing them, I want to think of the characters as the originals. I just read in a magazine that Jesse McCartney was thinking of playing Zuko. NO WAY!!! I swear if that happens I will refuse to watch the movie. They can not ruin my favorite character with him!! Please support me with this!!!

It’s all well and good to postulate about them making a fourth season, but Avatar was only ever conceived as a three season program. The producers are not being lazy, they are simply telling a good story and not running into the ground or waiting for it to get canceled like most American programs. Interestingly enough, the show is modeled after Japanese anime, and most Japanese series are written to last only a certain number of seasons and then finish, regardless of how popular they are.
As far as Avatar is concerned, many of the, supposed, unanswered questions were either left slightly open so that the viewer would be allowed to draw their own conclusions, or so they could leave the “Avatar Universe” open to tell other stories, like the producers always said they would.
I think people should appreciate this incredible show for what it is and be glad that the producers and writers kept it so fresh and intriguing with amazing story lines for three seasons that are just as thrilling to watch over and over as it was to see them the first time.

I am Asian and I was happy to hear a year ago that they would try to cast Asians in the movie. I guess what they really meant was we’d be extras. To anyone who says “its a made up universe…” shut up. No one here is going to try and say Snow White or Cinderella were African or Hispanic. They were Caucasian.
To say the characters in The Avatar weren’t Asian is crap and you know it. Geographically Northern China, North and part of South Korea, and Japan are in line with northern Europe. AND GUESS WHAT? Those Asian countries have a lot of naturally pale people. BUT THEY AREN’T Caucasian… they are ASIAN.
F this movie I’m not seeing it.

A bunch of white people are going to play the main characters- what a crock! Id rather just watch the series dvd’s then watch a bunch of white kids practicing martial arts in early Asia. I also did some research on the white kids who are playing the caracters – some look way too old and dont in anyway resemble the main characters. Go to google images and look up Noah Ringer and tell me he is fit to be Aang

Yes, I agree that guy is so not Aang. He looks like he’s 17 or something. And that girl playing Katara looks too young. What’s wrong with these people?! And I swear if Jesse McCartney plays Zuko, I will not watch the movie. Someone needs to stop that from happening.
LadySunami says:

What are you all on about? The series is quite over, no doubt about that. There is no need for an air book. If you listen to the director commentary for the final four episodes they explain the reason for the book titles. Each book is named after the major element that Aang learns to bend in the season. Since Aang has been an air bending master since the beginning, having an air book is unnecessary.
-
I also am opposed to calling the creators “lazy.” They are most certainly anything but. Just look at all the detail they put into a children’s television show! The world, the story, the characters, it is all so amazingly done! The creators planned from the beginning to have three seasons, and they stuck to that plan. Nothing wrong with that. I for one am annoyed by books/shows/etc that never end just because they are popular *cough* Naruto *cough*. If Avatar: the Last Airbender were a book, you (or I at least) would not expect an entire additional full length novel after the trilogy was over. You should then have the same respect for the television production.
-
Zuko’s mother is probably still alive somewhere, but Katara and Sokka’s mother is very much dead (that she is dead is not a conjecture, it is a fact). If there were a fourth book I’m pretty sure they wouldn’t go off searching for her, since they probably are already well aware of where she is buried (unless they lost her grave somehow… ^^;). In the commentary the creators discussed the Zuko wanting to find his mother bit, and admitted they had no idea where she was (aka they had never actually decided). One of creators (Michael DiMartino or Bryan Konietzko, I’ve forgotten which commentary voice was which) actually wanted to cut out that part at the end, but when the last two episodes were confirmed as being two instead of one (they planned on making the finale three episodes, not four but they didn’t want to cut things out) the other creator won and it was kept in the script.
-
The most I can hope for is a comic outlining some more details from the end, rather like the comics made to fill the gaps between book two and three. Anything else would be far too much work. The creators, and especially the Korean animators, deserve a bit of a break.

The 3rd season seemed as though the writers/producers were rushed. And I think it was the worst book to be quite honest. I think they got caught up in the success of the show (after season 1) and were trying to capitalize by making movie plans at the expense of the anime series (all the delays, weak episodes). Typical that money makes people run away from what made the show succesful in the first place. Well written story line and meaningful episodes. Who knows what direction they will go in with the movie… who knows.

no book 4 needed! they just did a poor job of completing the show in the last two seasons (book 2 and 3). Knowing how they have handled things in the past, a fourth book will prob not come out until 2020 anyway!

Let me get this straight. They want to cast white kids as the group that travels with the avatar???? Please tell me what’s wrong with this picture when the characters in the avatar are all Asian…. I know that the directors are worried about white people not seeing this movie because it will be seen as just another asian martial arts flick but let’s get real. The avatar fan base is full of white, black, asian, hispanic, indian people and to make the story full of characters that are not like the characters in the movie is ridiculous and to me may seem like racisim of old when in the 50’s and 60’s black singers had to have white guys on thier album cover so white people would buy their muisc. Lets stop this crap and get asians to play asians. I bet white people would be mad if they made a movie about Snow White and made her Black with an all black cast.. So let’s not screw this up and by the way who thought that M. Night was a good choice for a director??? what is Hollywood thinking this is crazy and a bunch of crap. Get M.Night out and replace him with a real director who knows who to make GOOD movies.

So here we go with a lenghty sentiment. To start off, there is no need for a fourth book or any side comics or anything else that pertains to the 3 existing books. If any of you are avid readers then you would know that it is very common practice for authors to leave loose ends… if they were to give a concrete resolution for everything, then they may ruin the ending of the story. A lot of the questions raised do not need closure, they are things that can easily be assumed. To add to that, if they had included it, then it would have just drug out the end to rediculous lengths. The action was over and the rest is not that entertaining. I feel the close was done well. As far as more books go, what else is there to write about? As far as the current era goes, the problem is over and there is nothing else of importance. I could see a new book about a future era or maybe even a past, but that is just monopolizing on the popularity of the current story. Regarding Aang being the last Airbender, it is uncertain. Just because he has the power does not mean his children will, also there are no ground rules set for dual benders… if it was something that was just passed down, then there would be plenty of people that could bend 2 or 3 or all 4 elements… it seems it is more of a passive traight and is kind of luck of the draw… if you took note, neither of Sokka and Katara’s parents were water benders, and Sokka himself was not a bender… just some things to think about
Butler says:

Alright so i checked out the cast for the movie and i have to say i am really displeased with most of the casting. I just cant picture that guy from Twilight being Sokka. The Sokka in the series was just so freaking funny, I just don’t think they can reproduce the comic genius of Sokka. What I do find interesting is the total change of the Fire Nation being of Indian decent, maybe this is M. Nights doing but I have to wonder about his casting for Uncle Iroh and the girl playing Kitara? WTF? with Shymalalan this could be really good but I just don’t get the feeling that this cast is going to work. I hope it does, but if it doesn’t at least the original series will still be as fantastic to watch again as always. That being said I was glad to hear that they may be doing further cartoons on this world and i really hope that they will include the old cast members in it as well. And I do really wish they would make a 4th season regardless of what they call it. Man it could be just the whole 3 season played by the acting troop that did the Avitar story while they were all hiding out…that by far was one of the funniest episodes and I would so sit down and watch all three seasons played out like that instead of the taste we got in that episode.

the casts of the movie just don’t make any sense, just like a movie about the life of michael jordan, and the director finds a white guy to play michael jordan….seriously wtf, no offense to Michael Jordan, he is awesome, but is there a problem about asian being an actor in this film? an insult to the great anime and to the chinese

Ok, Book 4 Air is absolutely required. Aang is the Last Airbender. Those that can Airbend are taught from early childhood to be Airbenders. Airbending needs to be taught and Aang is the master to teach it. So, along with the trials of becomming a teacher, rebuilding the Northern, Eastern, Western, and Southern air temples the others can tie up loose ends in the story. Series ends with all four temples running smoothly and Aang married and nearing old age.

Dude Book 4 would come out but be an entirely different story.
But I think when the cycle comes back to air I think that thr decendants of Aang will be the air avatars.

There are so many possibilities to the Book 4 premiere. In my opinion, the series ended to make room for the movies, then the last movie, which would correspond with Book 3, would end the series and possibly answer all the un-answered questions

i think it would be great to have a 4th book air…you know aang could have kids and they could be airbenders as well or other airbenders are still in hiding? possible maybe. hopefully the movie doesn’t suck. i would say ethinic wise i always imagined aang as tibetan, water nation as inuit(eskimo), fire nation as a japanese flavor( you know live on an island) and earth as chinese(completely huge landmass). i am sure everyone has their own opinions on that.

Air is already an element that Aang has mastered. All of the other books have been centralized around the elements that he needed to master. In my opinion, they should continue with Book 3: Fire, because every site that I have visited concerning a Book 4, they said that the series will end with Book 3: Fire. So here are the two possibilities I see: Either the show will continue with Book 3, or The Last Airbender movie trilogy will tie up loose ends such as the whereabouts of Zuko’s mother is, if Aang and Katara will have a relationship with each other, life after the war, how Aang and Zuko will repair the world, and so on. If you agree with me, comment “yes” below.
Big Avatar fan!!! Fingers crossed for Nickelodeon and M Night Shaymalan :-)

What happened to Zuko’s mother? You can’t leave that out!

What if Aang’s children aren’t benders, because bending has nothing to do with relatives?

I imagine Zuko found her mother . . . the creators wouldn’t be that much of d@#$-heads.

I’m dying to see how the make this movie. I’m hoping it’s as great as the show. The trailor looked really amazing. :D Everyone might be right with them making three movies for each book, and them answering all the unanswered questions from the last episode. It’s been bugging me, not to know what has happen.
