Iron Man 2 News And Rumors

In case you hadn’t heard, Don Cheadle is replacing Terrence Howard in Iron Man 2.  According to several online sources, this is because talks broke down between Terrence and Marvel over money among other things.  Most of the articles I saw also mentioned that Downey Jr. will continue on as Tony Stark /Iron Man, while Justin Theroux is writing the screenplay, and Jon Favreau has been signed for a second round of directing.  Also, Gwyneth Paltrow is returning as Pepper Potts.

I think it was a majorly stupid decision to hold out for more money (if that is the reason).  As you may remember, Howard has a scene in Iron Man where he looks at the older version of the suit (or an unpainted one), and says “Next time, baby.”  The reason of course is that he later becomes War Machine.  War Machine looks like a more burly version of Iron Man.

Interestingly enough, according to the Wikipedia article I linked to above:

“When Stark loses his company to Obadiah Stane and relapses into alcoholism, Rhodes takes over the armor and role of Iron Man, even fighting in the Secret Wars. He begins to experience headaches while using the armor, and his behavior began to grow more erratic and aggressive. Rhodes’s manic mental state is revealed to be the result of the armor’s cerebral interfaces, which are calibrated for Stark’s brain, leaving any other long-term user disoriented and confused. The recovering Stark helps Rhodes maintain the armor. Rhodes continues as Iron Man but his increasing paranoia causes him to believe that Stark means to retake the armor.

Rhodes goes on a rampage, and Stark is forced to don a crude, prototype suit of armor to stop Rhodes. Rhodes comes to his senses, and the two reconcile. The two fight together until Rhodes is injured by Stane, and Stark assumes the role of Iron Man again. In the aftermath of Stane’s suicide, Stark rebuilds his company. Rhodes and Stark continue to work together; Rhodes even risks his life and career to aid Stark during the Armor Wars.”

So, it sounds like the Iron Man movie, while staying true to the spirit of the comic books is a bit off with the continuity.  I have heard that Rhodes (Cheadle, now) will be donning the suit in IM2 or IM3.  So, since Stane is out of the picture now, we’ll have to see where they take the next two movies.

Cheadle is an excellent replacement.  He has crazy skills when it comes to acting, and has been believable in every role I have seen him in.  If anyone can pull off the switch, it’s he.
