Review: City of Ember

Thursday, October 23, 2008

The theater my daughter and I saw this movie in over the weekend was mostly empty, and that’s too bad.  This is a good movie.  It’s strange… I told several people how much my daughter and I enjoyed the movie, and nearly everyone said they had never heard of it before.  Furthermore, I checked my local theater, and this is the last day it will be there, so if you haven’t seen it yet, you probably missed it.  I strongly suggest you check it out when it comes to DVD.

City of Ember is about a city that was built beneath ground because of a great war of some sort.  It was build to last 200 years.  Well, 200 years have passed, and now the lights of Ember have begun to flicker and fade.  The Mayors of Ember had been entrusted with the secret of getting out of Ember, but in the intervening years, the secret was lost.  And now, when they most need an exit there isn’t one.  Or is there?

The movie has Bill Murray in it, and Tim Robbins, among others.  The main stars, though, are a couple of kids.  Everyone does an excellent job, and the effects are pretty stellar.  The movie has enough action, humor to keep it going to the end credits, and the sets are amazing to look at.  You really feel like you are trapped in the City watching the lights go dead one by one.

My daughter, who is six now, made me watch it again in the theater tonight (early release day at school, so we caught an early showing).  We both enjoyed it even more this time.  And you know what?  This time, we were the only ones in the theater.

Rating: ★★★★☆
