Kung Fu Panda is an awesome movie. In fact, it is the first animated movie I have seen in a long time that is as good or better than a Pixar movie. It’s about a panda (Jack Black) who lives in a noodle shop. Everyone thinks his destiny is to make noodles. He wishes for something more.
I find Jack Black annoying to say the least. However I can say that he did an amazing job. All of the actors did. Dustin Hoffman, Angelina Jolie, Jackie Chan, Lucy Liu, Seth Rogen, and Michael Clarke Duncan are just some of the other voices you’ll recognize.
Animation is stellar too. There are a ton of little things are only seen upon a second or third viewing. For example, when Po falls down the stairs at the beginning, check out the shadow on the floor.
KFP is filled with good-natured humor without resorting to poop and fart jokes. It’s appropriate for all ages (maybe not really small kids, though) with cartoon violence. Your little ones will be kicking and dancing around in Kung Fu style at the end of the movie.
I ended up seeing both the standard DVD and also the Blu-ray versions. I think it is well worth it to get the Blu. The only minor thing is that you don’t get “The Secrets of the Furious Five” extra movie that comes with the DVD. Oh well. It’s only 24 minutes long, and while the animation is OK, it doesn’t hold up to the standards of the original. Dustin Hoffman and Jack Black are the only voices I recognized. Most of the other voices were supplied by poor sound-alikes.
You can really see the difference between the DVD and Blu-ray versions of KFP. While the DVD is excellent, the Blu-ray is amazing. Colors are much more vibrant, and the sound seems fuller. Also, everything seems crisper and more life-like.
Movie Rating:

: As good or better than a Pixar movie. I have to admit that it has grown on me since I reviewed the theatrical version.
HD Transfer Rating:

: Colors are amazingly bright and vibrant. Some of the scenes look real. This is a must-have movie on Blu-ray.
By the way, it was recently announced that work has begun on Kung Fu Panda 2. So far, apparently Jack Black and Angelina Jolie have been signed on. Hopefully this will be a theater movie and not a direct to video crap movie.
