2012 Is Another End Of The World Movie By Roland Emmerich

Roland Emmerich has done it again.  2012 is his new big disaster movie.  According to IMDB, 2012 is  “about an academic researcher who leads a group of people in a fight to counteract the apocalyptic events that were predicted by the ancient Mayan calendar.” Wow.  That sounds awfully familiar.  Probably because we’ve already seen a slightly different take in The Day After Tomorrow.  You can see the Teaser Trailer below.

Just for once, I would love to see a big “world-wide disaster” movie done by someone else.  You may recall that he destroyed the world in Independence Day, and  The Day After Tomorrow, among others.  Sometimes, he just destroys New York (Godzilla).  But he always destroys a good story.

Emmerich’s movies could best be described as uneven at best.  They usually have a great concept (ID4, Stargate, 10000 BC), which is poorly executed.  His movies are all flash with little substance.

Still, Emmerich’s movies have something going for them that a lot of others do not:  Incredibly efficient marketing.  He is an excellent tease, only showing snippets of the disaster with the promise of more to come.  He delivers on that promise, too, with tons of spectacle.

2012 stars John Cusack (Jackson Curtis), Woodie Harrelson, Danny Glover (as the President), Amanda Peet (Kate), and a whole slew of other folks.

Still, if you don’t think about the plot holes and bad science, and don’t mind the occasional wooden actor (remember Bill Pullman’s President?!  Yikes!) you’ll have a good time. My wife is a huge fan, in fact.  She loves these kind of movies, and I know we’ll be in the line on opening day. I’ll try and leave my brain at the door.
