There have been some crazy celebrity deaths. For example (from the site filmschoolrejects.com):

Blonde, blue-eyed Gwili Andre from Denmark, “the highest priced model in America,” was taken on as a “Garbo look-alike” by RKO Studio, earning $25,000 a year and dating Howard Hughes. To her dismay, she failed to become a movie star. In a bizarre suicide, she was found sprawled on the bedroom floor of her apartment, burned to a crisp in a funeral pyre she had made out of old publicity clippings.

Or how about:

Character actor Albert (Dr. Cyclops, The Wild Bunch ) Dekker, a fan of autoeroticism, was found hanging from a shower curtain rod wearing delicate ladies’ silk lingerie. He had dirty hypodermic needles stuck in each arm, a hangman’s noose around his neck, a scarf over his eyes, and a rubber-ball bit in his mouth, its metal chains tied firmly behind his head. The corpse was trussed in leather belts fastened around his body like a halter, the end of one clutched in his hand. Each wrist was handcuffed separately. Among other equally weird sentiments scrawled in flaming red lipstick all over his body was “make me suck.”

There are eight more on the site. All very interesting and some very strange or disgusting…

From the Site:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: One week after the last 10 episodes will air on Nickelodeon, the “Avatar: The Last Airbender” panel will be at the San Diego Comic Con on Friday evening, July 25, 7:30-9:15pm in one of the (big!) 2000 person rooms. Please join co-creators Mike DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko and director Joaquim Dos Santos for a screening of the final chapters 320 & 321 and other fun activities (details to follow shortly on Nick.com and the SDCC website). Friday passes are almost sold out, so please act fast! We really want to see as many fans as possible in the room! On Saturday, Mike and Bryan will do a poster signing (time and details to follow). See you in San Diego!”

Hmmm. I bet they are already sold out.

I’m sure some news will come out of this event. We’ll try and keep you updated.

From the site:

“For the past few weeks Chris Henchy , Tommy Blacha, Matt Besser , Paul Sheer , Owen Burke and myself have been lighting up the message board on IMDB for Another Stakeout, a completely forgettable so-so sequel starring Richard Dreyfuss and Emilio Estevez.”

“Come join us and help us turn this movie into a giant cult hit for absolutely no good reason.” They suggest using IMDB.com’s message boards and other methods to get people interested in the movie.

This is all well and fine. However, now someone else has updated the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Another_Stakeout"target="_blank" class="fullsource" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker ('/outbound/article/en.wikipedia.org');">wikipedia.com site. It now says things like this about Another Stakeout:

“It was named “Most Important movie of the 1990s!” by Joel Siegel at from Good Morning America and some film critics refer to this movie as “the greatest sequel” ever, even better than films like The Godfather Part II or Aliens, though this point is arguable.”

To me, this illustrates another example of how dangerous wikipedia can be. Because wikipedia can be updated by just about anyone it is very easy to corrupt with fake facts and even downright lies.

In this situation, obviously, the edits have been all in the name of good harmless fun. But this is just another case of the truth being edited away from wikipedia by a group or an individual with an agenda.

Case in point: <a href="http://www.wired.com/politics/onlinerights/news/2007/08/wiki_tracker"target="_blank" class="fullsource" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker ('/outbound/article/www.wired.com');">this article from Wired.com, titled “See Who’s Editing Wikipedia - Diebold, the CIA, a Campaign” describes how corporations, and even the members of government edit wikipedia.com to further their own self-interests. And with “34.4 million edits, performed by 2.6 million organizations or individuals,” I bet it’s darn near impossible to regulate effectively.

Next time you go there to look up a definition of something, think about this: is what you found real? Maybe we should all go back to Encyclopedia Britannica.
