Akira

They’re going to split Akira? Can that even be done? Warner Bros. plans to turn the anime classic, Akira into a live-action American film. The setting has changed to the United States and it’s now being setup for a summer 2009 release.

Warner Bros. will turn anime artist Katsuhiro Otomo’s six-volume graphic novel “Akira” into two live-action feature films, the first of which is being fast tracked for release in summer 2009. Legendary will co-finance with WB.

Each feature will be based on three of the books in Otomo’s series. The story takes place in New Manhattan, a metropolis that was rebuilt after being destroyed 31 years earlier. Otomo will exec produce the films.

The original Akira is probably one of the greatest animated (manga) movies of all time. it will be interesting to see how things shake out. Leonardo DiCaprio’s production company is at the helm and possibly Leo himself will take the role of Kaneda. I’m sure we’ll hear more.
